Chapter Four
Upon hearing our voices, royal guards peered out of the antechamber, and His Highness from behind Lord Simeon. Then, after rolling their eyes, they all returned just as quickly.
Now that we were alone again, Lord Simeon came closer, wearing a sour look. âGo back to your room. If you wander about dressed like that, youâll catch a cold.â
With a hand on my back, he turned me to face the other way. He then proceeded to walk along with me, so I nestled against his body. âHave you finished working?â
âI wonât finish working until His Highness returns to Ventvert Palace, but he told me I could rest for tonight. Iâll leave the remaining tasks to the guards on duty.â
I nodded. This was just the kind of answer Iâd expected. âThen you can talk to me for a while, canât you? Or are you so tired that you have to go to bed right away?â
âNo, not really. But what is it you want to talk about?â
âAnything. I donât mind. Only, youâve been clinging so closely to His Highness all day that Iâve barely seen your face, let alone spoken to you. I thought we might at least eat dinner together, but then you were standing guard outside the room!â
âOf course I was. Iâm here as a royal guard, not as a guest.â
âBut thatâs boring! Iâm so lonely!â
âHonestly, stop making such a fuss.â
But even as he admonished me, Lord Simeonâs voice was gentle. When I clung to his arm, he didnât shake me off. Itâs safe to say that heâs happy we can spend this time together too, no? While I had the opportunity, I took in as much of his large bodyâs reassuring warmth as I could.
We soon reached my door, where I invited him inside. I suggested that we could stay together and sleep alongside each other all night. But alas, he told me couldnât.
He did, however, sit beside me on the bed. âHer Highness Lady Anna spent the afternoon showing you around the castle, didnât she? Did you collect any good material?â
My husband knew me so well. I replied with a large nod. âYes! I got all kinds of inspiration. She told me some interesting stories too.â
âAbout the castle, you mean? Did it include the haunting in the chapel?â
âOh, you know the story too?â
âItâs relatively famous. Besides, Iâve come here quite a few times.â
That made sense. Heâd have heard it already. Such a shameâI was hoping to tell him a tale of romance from long ago.
But when I said as much, Lord Simeon laughed softly. âRomance? Hmm, Iâm afraid thatâs all a fabrication from later in history. In such a brutal era, a woman wouldnât be able to go walking on her own, even if her territory wasnât at war.â
âLady Anna said the same thing. Still, people have been falling in love since time immemorial! Itâs possible that two people met and developed affection for one another in the midst of war. No one can say for certain that it didnât happen.
